Review

Peoples are Peoples is an EP of Detroit influenced, soulful house music with a strong nod towards classic Chicago & NY sounds of old. ‘D’ Jam is a looped, hard, tracky groove; Yes I Can a soulful, bass-heavy piece with building, overlapping vocal parts and You And Me is a raw piano-led jam. James Duncan was born in Toronto, Canada and is currently based in New York City where he is active as a musician and producer. His releases and remixes have appeared on his own label Le Systeme (including the very well received 2003 EP Times Like These), Dance Tracks sub-label Traxxx and Daniel Lui’s Chair Recordings. Attempting to blend the sounds of gritty Detroit with the beat of New York City, James’s releases are beginning to gain solid support from DJs around the world. His tracks throw back to the dancefloor of the recent past, where techno and house music mixed freely, nurturing a sound that fused heart and soul with boundless experimentation and expression. As well as producing house music, James is an active performing musician. In particular, his trumpet work has featured on releases by Metro Area (the tracks Orange Alert & Nerves) and Morgan Geist (Super EP) - both on Environ; with DJ Romain (on the Nu Faze and Metro Trax labels) and on Morgan Geist’s remix of The Rapture’s House of Jealous Lovers on DFA. He has also made occasional live appearances with Metro Area. Outside of the dance music world, James is a member of Brookyn based chamber pop ensemble The Silent League (ex-Mercury Rev) and is a standing member of IZITITIZ, an improvisation collective led by veteran NYC bassist Matt Heyner of No Neck Blues Band.
