Review

Alexei Meshkov aka nooncat was born in the old beautiful Russian city of Smolensk. In 1989 he moved to Moscow; and studied from 1990 until 1993 at the Moscow Medical Academy. In 1994 he became a very popular underground clothes designer with the support of the legendary Ptyuch magazine. Alex started to perform as a DJ in1996 and pretty soon was hosting his own radio shows at the radio stations “SubStation” followed by “2000 radio” and then “Dynamite FM”. Today he is a resident DJ at the Mix club, and regularly plays in other venues like Phlegmatic Dog, Rynda Party and more. His previous releases were out on German labels as Treibstoff, Konvex-Konkav, Salo, Trapez, and in Russia - on Citadel Rec. We are proud to release these amazing 3 tracks from Alexei on Trenton… First “Love”: a killer deep minimal groovy tune with a poppy synth line that just stays into your head forever… Followed by Reynold’s remix (half of duplex100 and Trenton’s owner). On B side “Sex” is just this outstanding electro tech house track, definitely the dance-floor treat of that record! It is fat; it grooves and drives… Finally “psychic kids” could actually be a dance remix of a Boards of Canada’s tune… A very strange and atmospheric cut to end a set… or to start it ?…

DJ MAG 12/2005: “He comes from an obscure part of Russia but that doesn’t stop Alexei Meshkov from releasing music that crosses borders. The last time Alexei appeared in this column, he was making dreamy, layered techno, but since then, he has toughened up his style: ‘Love’ is a slinky, compressed acid roller, while ‘Sex’ builds from a minimal backing to climax with a grating, noisy cacophony. There are still remnants of his previous work though, and the nagging bass and emotive chords of ‘Psychic Kids’ will appeal to anyone who played his deeper releases. 4/5”
