Review

Simbad (aka P.L. Stanislas Renouf) is truly a man of many names and guises. His incredible range as a producer spans from big band jazz to Jamaican dancehall through to bouncy hip-hop, twisted broken-beat and Detroit flavoured techno and has seen him work with the likes of Tony Allen, Ron Trent, Talvin Singh, Bugz in the Attic and Robert Owens to name a few… More recently he’s been delivering his unique blend of ‘quality booty music’ as Marathon Men on London based Chiilfunk and Sweden’s Raw Fusion and Gamm labels. ‘Solar System’ sounds like it has been beamed down from some far-flung planet, with it’s off kilter rim shots and evolving string parts. This track is definitely way out there and won’t be for everyone but for those whose fantasy dream band consists of Carl Craig, Sun Ra, Derrick May and Riuchi Sakamoto then this is for you! Domu gets his mitts on ‘Solar System’ resulting in an almost cacophonous mash up of filthy beats, Detroit stabs and relentless sub bass. Strictly for the headstrong! Flip over for ‘Bright’, another genre defying beauty, designed it seems to make my life difficult trying to describe it. Rolling house beats, cut up chords, 2 parts Detroit, 1 part Chicago, a sprinkling of Paris.
