GROOVE MAG Germany “this is for the real Connaisseurs!!” LEROSA is Dublin-based Italian producer Leopoldo Rosa. The title track RUSKI combines a rough-cut sampled break with a loose, minimal arrangement of sub-bass and liquid synth pads. On the flip, RUSSELL and TEMPIO are deep, moody house explorations, beautifully suspended by shifting sine wave pads and Rhodes-like chords. Born in Rome, Leo developed a love of electronic music through Italian pop music of the 1980s, before discovering hip hop and acid house. He began DJing in the early 90s and in 1995 moved to Dublin where he got heavily into darker, deeper electronica and electro by the likes of Autechre, Drexciya and the extended Detroit-inspired musical underworld. Leo began producing his own music in 2000, concentrating initially on electro but broadening his range into unconventional house and techno styles. His debut LEROSA release was the ‘Maike EP’ on Dublin’s D1 Recordings in 2005. As well as this Real Soon release, Leo also has a forthcoming 12″ on Enclave Recordings (Ireland).

Groove Magazin (GER): “Real Soon bleibt sich treu. Mit Lerosa putzen die Londoner einen in Irland lebenden Italiener raus, der kurze Tracktitel, Drexciya und Acid-House mag. Das lustige „Ruski“ klingt jedoch eher wie eine von Maurice Fultons aberwitzigen Syclops-Abenteuern. Gebrochene Beats und Sub-Bass en mass liefern sich ein spannendes Rennen. „Russell“ und „Tempio“ führen tiefen Jazz-House und einen introvierten Hofknicks vor Autechre ins Feld. Für den verfeinerten Connaisseur.”

Philip Sherburne (THE WIRE): “London's Real Soon label does it again, coming through with an absolutely what-the-fuck of a track with "Ruski", the long A-side cut on this second single from Dublin's Leopoldo Rosa. As is so often the case with Real Soon, what sets these tracks apart is their tempo: "Russell", a Rhodes-heavy House cut recalling Domu's Detroit Techno jazz, sticks the closest to standard dance music tempos, and perhaps coincidentally is the least immediately striking cut here, though it's still an assured exercise in colour and control. "Tempio" pulls back the throttle on an otherwise straightforward House rhythm until is skanks dubbily in place. But "Ruski" quite literally follows the beat of a different drummer, pairing lickety-split snare edits with a kick drum creeping along about 110bpm. Nasty, tubular bass riffs flesh out the groove while sparkling glissandi rain down from above.”
