Review

Naughty aka Filippo Moscatello has been in the game for some time. From his days coproducing the early Gigolo releases for some guy called DJ Hell, his artist releases on labels such as Ferox, Good Life and Eskimo, and his remixes and productions for artists such as Goldfrapp, Laurent Garnier, Inner City, Fisherspooner, Terranova, Tiga and Christopher Just among others, his CV is a roll call of the great and the good from the last decade of house and techno. This new artist release is his first for Moodmusic, the start of a new chapter, and put quite simply it’s one of the finest moments of his career. “The World of a Woman” is immaculate and uplifting house music. A deceptively simple melody burrows into your head and your heart, and the whole thing has a sunny and effortless elegance which recalls the very best balearic records of the early 1990s but still sounds absolutely contemporary. Already being hammered by DJ’s such as Ewan Pearson and Dirt Crew this will be a summer anthem on all discerning dancefloors, in the same way that Locodice’s “El Gallo Negro” was last year. “The World of A Man” is a totally different beast, a darker and moodier journey into twirling analogue synths and duelling bassline action. This one surely needs to be played out loud and proud. We do so! One 12. Two bombs. It doesn’t get better than this.

Resident Advisor Net: “ He's been a fixture on many a discerning imprint for a while now, but he's hardly prolific, for which we should all be sorry. Here Filippo Moscatello turns up under his Naughty alias to deliver two slabs of understated atmospheric funk that have more than a whiff of the fragile, ephemeral sounds currently being milked by Martin Buttrich and Loco Dice. The two tracks are not that different from each other, but at the same time subtly display an originality that, in my opinion anyway, makes them easily recognisable. By that I mean that the majority of listeners would, I think, guess correctly what each track's specific gender is. ‘The World of a Man’ is the darker of the pair, relying on a flange-like effect interspersed with cyclical pulsating stabs that veer towards the darkness. This works on more than one level, and the eventual result is a piece of slow-burning dubbed-out disco that is brought back from spiralling out of control by a simple and childish irregular off-key breakdown. ‘The World of a Woman’ in contrast has a much sunnier disposition. It starts off with a dense kick and allows itself to build in a similar way to its flipside, but the mood is much more optimistic. This is one to be shaking your capirinhas to. The strength of both tracks is their restraint. If he'd added whistles to ‘The World of a Woman’ it would have come off as tacky, and raising the volume of the throbbing synth in ‘The World of a Man’ would have been a touch too much. The force is strong in this one. Words / Paul Corey”

X MUALLEM: “This Italian guy is one of my favourites anyway, and he kills it again with this 12”. Both tracks are K I L L E R!!! Most of all World of a Woman. Sounds like old school Italo House meets Chicago Deep House. Fantastic vibe! Will play it next week in Tel Aviv! Sunshine, beach, women, etc. Perfect setting for this track!!! ”
