Back in 1993, Afterlife was one of the hottest underground parties in NYC. It featured some of New York’s finest DJ’s of the time, including Nick Jones, Francois K, Kim Lightfoot, Naeem Johnson and a who’s who of the underground scene at the time. Its creator and musical director, Kalim Shabazz created an atmosphere that nurtured a special form of creative anarchy. Anything goes as long as the party people are feeling it. Where the music was as good and the punch was most definitely spiked. While Kalim has worked under various monikers and several partnerships over the years (including many memorable singles on NYC’s Wave and Shelter Records) we’re proud to be bringing the first in a new wave of solo releases under his own name. With “Peak Bomb” Kalim has taken heavy influence from the more modern German scene and combined it with the deeper, soulful music that played such an important role in his musical upbringing. Modern electronic music with a soul…On the flip side, we thought it only appropriate to ask one of the modern masters of the deep German sound to show us his take on things. So we approached one of our favorite Berliners, Phonique, for the remix and he turned around a stunning, stripped down take of his own. Reducing the elements to the essentials while adding a few of his own special ingredients to create a truly beautiful full, yet somehow minimal version that has kept us entranced since we first heard it. The truth is, we can’t convey strongly enough just how happy we are to bring this track out. Kalim Shabazz is both an important part of New York’s past musical history and (as he shows here) it’s future. We’ve seen firsthand the great reactions both mixes have gotten on the dancefloor and we hope you’ll enjoy these as much as we have been.. But enough blabber! Just have a listen for yourself! |
TFR006 in the media |
Clive Henry (Peace Division): ““Quite like the Phonique mix. Orig mix is like something from back in the day when it was all about the drums and big rooms..!” Dave Mothersole (Kiss FM): “ “I like this. both mixes are good - on first listen it's the phonique's that's my fave.”” The thin red line of House Music. Sehr schön. http://www.thugfucker.org giant steps••••-•••••” D\'julz (Pokerflat): “both mixes are cool” Geddes (mulletover): “ “The remix is a good tool. Phonique always delivers!”” Giles Smith: “Really nice to hear some real House music. The original is my favourite with its staright forward effective groove. Like Phonique's remix to with its loose percussion. ” Giosue Impellizzeri: “The ispiration for this new 12" coming from the underground scene of the 90s in New York. "Peak Bomb" has a pumping groove and charming melodic elements as piano assolo (probably it was played and recorded live). Great for start the programme. Melody + rhythms + dreams of old scene of 90s. ” Italoboyz (Mothership): “ “Really like the original version of peak bomb, really cool and full of style...”” Jamie Jones (Crosstown rebels: “I like the Phonique mix here, Nice afterhours record.” Jimpster (Freerange): “Yes yes!! I really like both mixes.”” Stuart Patterson: “ “Absolutely love the original of Kalim Shabazz , really my kind of house down to a tee [ remix is strong as well] but i'll be playing original for a long time [ have tracklisted it for next radio show as well] ...” ” Tedd Patterson: “ “Thanks for the cool peak bombs ;) Love the the original mix on that.
