O The lead single from Jay Haze’s new album Love & Beyond, arriving 28 April. o A jacking floor-filler powered by Jay’s previously unknown beatboxing skills. o Features exclusive B-side “Free Ride", a collaboration with Ricardo Villalobos. Jay Haze’s upcoming album Love & Beyond is set to win over new fans, confuse longtime followers, and piss off the haters as Jay takes things to the next level. Available on 2xCD (digital soul and instrumental beatscapes) and 2xLP (entirely different tracks of dance material), the album is a noticeable departure from his back catalog (which nears 100 releases if you include his numerous aliases and side projects). “Ass to Mouth” is the first single, driven by layers of Jay’s own voice - breathing, cooing, and clicking - combined with ominous synth lines, resulting in a bouncy, sweaty workout track. “Ass to Mouth” is inspired by classic Chicago house, yet wouldn’t sound out of place on Missy Elliott’s So Addictive or Björk’s Medúlla. In addition to a stripped-down a cappella version, this single includes the non-album B-side “Free Ride,” a 10-minute spacious groove co-produced with his buddy Ricardo Villalobos, showcasing the synergy between two of the most forward-thinking producers in the global techno/house community. |

Resident Advisor NET: “The B-side of this record is a new Tuning Spork collaboration between Jay Haze and Ricardo Villalobos, while Haze has some cheeky fun going it alone on the A. ‘Ass To Mouth’ is a jacking house track dressed up with a bit of beatboxing. With wolf-like howls and a suitably sleazy vocal, in the end it is clear that this track is meant to sound as pornographic as its name. The inclusion of the beatbox, which is Haze’s own, and a few other elements as an acapella on the record is also a thoughtful touch. One of the more distinctive tools around at the moment, it certainly seems like it would lend itself easily to creative use. ‘Ass to Mouth’ is indelicate, certainly, but still exudes a certain undeniable charm and appeal. ‘Free Ride’ on the flip is more familiar territory, skewing closer to techno and encapsulating a sound not a million miles away from Villalobos and Haze’s previous Free Your Mind 12-inch, but this time bearing more fruitful results. The track is a smooth-flowing, intricate and engrossing excursion that ebbs and flows without ending up anywhere that different from where it started, but it still satisfies in the end, mostly due to the magnetism of the fantastic central riff. ‘Free Ride’ doesn’t get past the point of being a groove, but it’s a good one. Words / Colin Shields” tsugi mag (F): “Face A : “Ass To Mouth”, terme emprunté au porno, pour un titre qui montre presque tout. Respirations haletantes, beats secs, groove moite. De la house pour danser hard. Face B: “Freeride”, produit avec Villalobos. Minimalisme contemplatif. Fini de baiser.” |
