Review

The second release of max loderbauer and tobias freund on non standard productions. ” squelch” is the second part of the last year released ” reference ” ep. loderbauer again is responsible for the analog sounds and sequences from the doepfer a-100 modularsystem and freund provides the beats from his roland machines. reverberating cymbals and pulsating drones are morphing and throbbing. beats are rising but never seem to come to an end. if you think you’ve heard it before, think again. _ non standard institute 2008 non standard productions / nsp o4

NSP04 in the media

Boomkat: “Over the space of only a half dozen releases Max Loderbauer and Tobias Freund's Non Standard Institute has reached near mythical status, with their blend of analog beat workouts and next-level sound formations making for one of the most distinct and inspired sounds in electronic music circa 2008. This latest 4-tracker is quite possibly their best too, with long and effortlessly complex tracks taking you through the machinations of drum machines and sound effects slipping in and out of function to create a sound that's almost impossible to pin down. The long list of equipment used sheds little light on the many rewards this excellent record has to offer, but makes for a fun read nonetheless with things like the Doepfer a-100, sam-16, TR 808 and even a TR 909 borrowed from Dan Bell getting credit for the beautiful noises contained within. These twelves never last long - get on this baby while you can. Highly Recommended.”

Dj Misk (AltroVerso / Italy): “i'm moved by magnetic feeling of 'nikita', a delicious tune that i will play in my chill-out sessions. respect to this artists.”

Giles Smith (secret sundaze/tw: “definitely home listening but love the broken beats of "nikita". sweet.”

IDJ Mag (UK): “NSI’s Tobias Freund is already being tipped as producer of the year by numerous purist types, and to be sure, his abstract approach is million miles away from the by-numbers churn of much contemporary minimal. The four tracks here cover clattering Basic Channel-ish dub, lo-fi analogue growls, and anorexic techno blips with unpredictable otherworldliness, making it a highly attractive proposition for purveyors of techno’s furthest fringes.”

Laurent Garnier (F-Com): “intresting experimental ep will present on my radio show”

Mathias Kaden (Freude am Tanze: “very special music that i really respect and like!!my full support....”

philip sherburne: “amazing. "risset" is obviously the most striking track here, but both A-side cuts are great, and "nikita" is simply amazing, a breath of fresh air... so good to have people moving outside the 4/4, 128-bpm boundaries...”

Resident Advisor NET: “Following releases on Cadenza, Sahko, and their own Non Standard Recordings imprint, Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer’s fifth excursion as nsi. (non standard institute) follows more in the footsteps of their “Reference” single than their recent Plays Non Standards full-length. Armed with classic analog gear and Daniel Bell’s 909 (he’s thanked on the sleeve), the duo set about crafting four tracks of deconstructed dance dementia, each track sifting unadorned waveforms over deceptively simple techno programming for a sound closer to Mika Vanio than Luciano. Opener “Ride” takes its title literally, with a series of bleeps and squawks kicking in and out over a single ride cymbal, opening the door for many a DJ to layer with, well, just about anything electronic. The title track, on the other hand, is a more subtle affair, with layers of shuffling percussion slipping over a series of ever-processed riffs, some vaguely Detroit ambient chords, and a funky bass groove for a sound akin to classic Black Dog material. “Risset” plays exclusively with tempo, rhythm and pitch, creating new aural illusions from all three, ever increasing speed but somehow running in place. “Nikita” gently thumps along while humming saucers whistle by into a gorgeous Martian sunset. nsi.’s mythical status seems to grow with each subsequent release, and “Squelch” certainly won’t do anything to harm that. Whether pursuing twisting rhythm and noise combos or neoclassical minimalism, however, it is clear that Freund and Loderbauer have hit a nerve that strikes both the experimental-minded noisenik crowd and the electronic dance community.”

Stefan Goldmann (Macro): “One of the most innovative EPs in ages. I'm really intrigued by all tracks on there. A monumental piece of art. Outstanding Wahnsinn!”
