Talking about Sasse and his Moodmusic imprint means looking back over a decade of solid contributions to the house music canon. And now, after last year’s 10th anniversary of the label, the Berlin based Finn is himself back in the spotlight with his second studio album “Toinen". The name, which means “2nd” in Finnish, reflects a desire to both honor his Finnish roots and point out the surprising fact that this is only his 2nd artist album in his very productive 15 year musical career of releasing hundreds of singles, EPs and remixes. While his debut album, “Made Within The Upper Stairs Of Heaven", was a clear Italo and Space Disco influenced work with a sound highlighted by bright claps on solid beats, euphoric and haunting melodies and dark vocals, the new album takes his trademark sound to the next level. His long experience as a DJ and producer is demonstrated once more on “Toinen". But this time Sasse takes a strong turn towards Detroit rather than Italy. Uplifting chords and euphoric themes are a trademark of this longplayer but when the funky basslines drop there’s no doubt that you’re listening to a proper Sasse production. If you listen closely you can hear echoes of his mid-90’s productions as Freestyle Man, but here they’re just seeds, nourished with the musical inspirations from his numerous DJ travels, not to mention plenty of that famous Berlin electronic funk! Another surprising new element in many of the tracks is the classic use of white noise which, when pushed to the forefront, adds a new sense of urgency to his music. Especially on “Clemens", a classic peak time club bomb, that feels both minimal and housey at the same time. And with that house groove in full effect it’s no surprise to hear the classic percussion sounds painstaking placed below. Creating a solid base under which all these new sounds can ride. But in the end it’s the composition that creates the magic, revealing an atmosphere and emotions from happiness to the mystic darkness that

Debug (GER): “Das einzige Manko an Sasses zweitem Album ist, dass es nicht schon im Frühjahr erschien. Es hätte mir einige Sonnenaufgänge versüßt. Weniger Italo, mehr Detroit und Tranciges als bei seinem Vorgänger verzaubern mich. Alles ist jetzt möglich: Partys mit Seele statt klarer Sachlichkeit und einer Wärme, die den Herbsteinstieg verzückt wie bei "wrapper", mit "take me to bologna" per Cabrionach Rimini fahren, mit Aperol am Strand, oder frisch verliebt, ein Wochenende bei "break up" im Bett zu verbringen und Alvin Tofflers Bücher bei "friday sessions" und "new sun day" zu lesen. Unheimlich schönes Werk und mein Album des Monats.”

Groove Mag (GER): “Deepness ist sein Steckenpferd. Das tiefe Eintauchen in warme Chords, das Erkunden von ozeanischen Flächen, und dabei immer eine Handbreit Synthiefunk unterm Kiel. Kaum ein Berliner Kapitän kennt sich besser in den tiefen Gewässern von Techno und House aus als der gebürtige Finne Sasse. Hier, wo kein Lüftchen den Frieden zwischen den Akkorden stört, wo sich jedes Element rücksichtsvoll an das andere schmiegt und gerade die Kleinigkeiten auf den seichten Wellenkämmen zu funkeln beginnen, sticht er in See und wird dabei von einer wunderbaren Gelassenheit begleitet. Auf den ersten Höreindruck wirkt das Album sehr zurückgenommen und unaufdringlich, doch wandelt sich diese Sanftheit in eine dauerhafte Spannung, die man erst so richtig registriert, wenn der letzte Ton gespielt ist. Sasse vermittelt Geschwindigkeit und Euphorie durch geduldiges auf und ab der Elemente, ohne jede Hektik. Dabei taucht „Break Up“ mit strahlenden Streichern aus der Tiefe auf, und „Clemens“ wirbt charmant um die Gunst der peaktime. Durchweg: Wunderbar”
