Review

This latest offering is one hell of a coup, with Swedish techno forerunners Minilogue’s sophomore Wagon Repair release. Following in the footsteps of 2007’s ‘Elephant’s Parade’, the Malmo duo have also released on such luminary labels as Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels and Traum Schallplatten. They have recently received critical acclaim for their artist album ‘Animals’ and jazz fusion album as IMPS on Japan’s Mule imprint. As ever, this release is laden with the kind of warped sounds and dense textures that have become their signature. Always pushing the envelope, Minilogue transcend expectations with every release. Opener ‘Snake Charmer’ incorporates ghostly eastern flute sounds into a tribal percussive drive. Wisps of warped synth and trace pulsed tones encircle the central beat, recoiling into dreamy ambience before biting with thudding bass kick and disorienting melodic keys. Cunning and slick, the subtle but purposeful attack of this track befits it’s title. On the flip, ‘Urban Slough’ is a deep techno gem. Driven by droning synth and reverberated percussion, decaying melodies develop slowly while meandering in and out of tune. Staying true to their consistently apocalyptic vision, this mix of slightly industrial beats and howling tune is a melancholy masterpiece.

WAG043 in the media

2000 and one (Intacto): “this is the ultimate combination of a funky house groove with a sublime haevenly melodic tune. after elphant parade the best miniloque for me! thanx ”

Adultnapper Audiomatique: “Nice tunes here. Will both work well in the mix. Great production as always from Minlogue”

Anja Schneider Mobilee Records: “full support of snake charmer ! really nice tune .”

Dj Mag (UK): “ Snake Charmer is another bomb from Minilogue. Slowly but surely some crazy whipped up beats develop into a percussive frenzy with many different timbres vying for youre attention. Only three quarters of the way through the track some electronic flute solo enters the fray. Definitely hear some strong Mathew johnson influence here with the tracks live jam feel. "Urban Slough" on the flip is more experimental with its breakbeaty feel, growling bass and melodic flourishes. Solid. ”

Efdemin (Dial): “ticking bomb!”

Efdemin (Dial): “BOMB”

Interessante Platte. GJ”

James Flavour (Dirt Crew): “A side for me please! ”

Jamie Jones (Crosstown Rebels_: “Definitely into the percussion side of this, will be playing. Nice stuff.”

Jesse Rose: “Snake Charmer is dope! Lots of plays from me..”
