Sideshow is Fink on ninja tune!! “Admit one”, the new album from Sideshow, is a particular labour of love. Fin Greenall would describe himself as the engine of Sideshow, backed up by the band he has been touring with as legendary London label Ninja Tune’s first and foremost singer-songwriter, Fink. During the bands downtime in between touring Europe and the USA, and writing his critically acclaimed soul-blues-dub, they came together in his 7Dials studio in Brighton to bring us some more trademark dub infused goodness.. Here to tell you about the album is Sideshow himself. “Most of the tracks are live versions, sometimes the 8th or 9th take of tracks….because that’s real. Some of the tracks on this album are just straight up tracks, others are covers or versions of tracks I love. Yeah – there are a few samples in there, yeah that bassline is the bassline from that old record – sometimes dub and the nature of dub is about paying tribute, not stealing ideas….. This fine line runs throughout the history of dub and reggae, and runs through this record. When I first starting producing stuff back in the early nineties it was old dub records that acted like a text book on how to do it – the dub producer masters would often record stuff “live” – and so would make mistakes sometimes – and when they did you could pick up little things like “oh right – the bassline and kick are on the same channel”, or “right! the fx have their own channels, and the snare has it’s own too” kinda thing…. Dub to me is about space, vibe, texture, it’s about not thinking too hard, but feeling. Dub is like the church of music to me – a simple innocence with immense power, I hope you feel that in the album Admit One…” ‘Admit One’ has brought together many musicians. Guy Whittaker (bass), Tim Thornton (drums) and Ellie Wyatt (strings), whilst a number of talented vocalists have also collaborated including Tina Grace (Nitin Sawhney, Moby, Terry Callier); Cortney Tidwell whose sublime debut album ‘Do |

drownedinsound.com: “Sideshow, a side project of Ninja Tune artist Fink, deliver a couple of very special tracks on second album Admit One (Aus Music, out February 2nd). 'French Model in Dub' threads twilight strings through a dubwise reimagining of Kraftwerk¹s 'The Model', while 'If Alone' is an outstanding deep roller with a vocal provided by erstwhile Basic Channel collaborator Paul St Hilaire, aka Tikiman.” Tolle Platte. Ernsthaft. SD” IDJ: “Sideshow “Admit One” – Aus Otherwise known as Ninja Tune’s Fink, Sideshow delivers a strong contender for album of the year in ‘Admit One’ (yes, I know, it’s January). It’s taken from live takes with an accomplished live band for a start, so there’s a real, rich sound throughout with the sort of imperfections that ooze charm. As with previous Sideshow output, ‘Admit One’ is a shining beacon of a real dub feeling in every sense where instrumentals mesmerise and vocal contributions from Tina Grace, Paul St. Hilaire and Cortney Tidwell rouse. The latter in particular delivers a wonderfully fresh indie-pop track in ‘Television’ which makes the album worth the spend in itself. Naysayers and purists will say this has all been done before but there’s nothing hackneyed or copyist here and it’s a joy.” Laurent Garnier: “THIS IS AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL ALBUM - I WILL PRESENT IT ON MY RADIO SHOW AS WELL AS PLAYLIST LOT'S OF TRACKS ON MY WE RADIO - bravooooooooooooooo ” Nitzan Hermon (Clash): “great move by the label as well as superb production by the sideshow ” Philip Sherburne: “WOW only three songs in so far, but WOW. this is fucking great. I didn't know that he was fink, also! I love fink...I'm really impressed with the album. ” Smag Magazin: “Dieses Album gibt seinen Inhalt nicht so einfach preis. Es bedarf eines kleinen Messerschnitts und der dezenten Verwirrung, die der Opener "Television" stiftet. Ein flirrender Popsong, der gar nicht und doch perfekt auf das vorbereitet, was Sideshow hier produziert hat. Dub ist die Essenz, auf die sich "Admit One" herunterbrechen lässt, ohne immer explizit nach Dub zu klingen. Groß! 4 von 5 Sternen” The Wire Magazine/UK: “Perhaps best known as Fink for his material on ninja tune, Fin Greenall is cloaked in a dubster guise for Sideshow. The opening tune on this set, "Television", could easily throw the unsusopecting listener off track however, as it's a standard slice of modern euro pop. From there on in it's strictly dubwise wth the following "Sequential Dub" a spacy haunted stepper, and "If Alone" with Paul st. Hilaire probably the albums pinnacle. That track is perhaps best appreciated on the 12" remix by Appleblim and Komanasmuck, which with it's "Echo Beach" bassline melody in the mix becomes reminiscent of Two In A Room's 1987 House miracle "Passing Thought", or the early work of Kevin Reese Saunderson as Inner City - it's that good. Recorded at the 7Dials studio in brighton, all the tracks were worked up live by Greenalls touring group, referring to a classic dubmasters template in applying his trademark effects. An example of modern dub's at it's peak.... ” Thomas Palermo (XLR8R): “ Whoh! Dynamite new album. This release is absolutely airtight and deserving of repeated plays, spins and praise. Sideshow update Dub Syndicate and On-U's dub blueprint for the 22nd Century and beyond. ” www.4Clubbers.net: “Fin Greenall is best known to music lovers as one of legendary imprint Ninja Tunes` most established artists, since his debut there in 2003. Taking in a wide range of music, but centered round the acoustic guitar and working with a selection of equally talented musicians, he`s carved a niche very much his own under his Fink moniker. But there`s another element to his musical constitution. For the last six years, he`s taken a concurrently divergent path as Sideshow, producing often dubby, always sure-footed slices of downbeat electronica. And 2009 sees him unfurl his first album under that name, Admit One, on Will Saul`s ever-interesting Aus Music. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Sideshow is music built on a live foundation. Working with a selection of musicians from Ninja`s own coterie, and interesting vocalists, the album stands out on its own, but the musical craft really is a joy to behold. Opening with Cortney Tidwell (last seen on the amazing Don`t Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up) on Television, it`s a swathe of up-tempo ethereal almost-pop, unlike anything else you`ve heard. From there on the ten tracks mellow into seven shades of dub. From the methodical lilt of Sequential (a variant on his remix of Will Saul and Tam Cooper`s Sequential Circus), through the album`s sublime highlight, If Alone, with Paul St Hilaire`s vocals winding over the melody, to the string-laden of French Model In Dub, with Samar the model in question, teasingly playing with Kraftwerk`s 80s synth classic, it`s an utter pleasure. There`s really not a weak track on the album, and every one is infused with real space and depth, making use of the deep and weighty basslines, contrasting them with superb vocals and finely-honed instrumentation. It leaves you with the impression that Greenwall really is one of this country`s unsung musical genii, operating outside the normal spheres, and producing musical beauty at every turn. Fantastic.” |
