Mikael “The Skull” Stavöstrand is one of the better known artists in the Swedish techno scene. Deconstructed sounds, experimental tones and minimal changes are the base of his comprehensive works. Since starting in the 90’s he has released thirty 12” EP’s and a further 19 albums on various renowned labels. Besides he also manages the labels Mitek and Sunset Diskos and played at festivals and the largest clubs in the world. His debut on Highgrade Records is a very varied and complex mix of sounds. A1 is a laid-back crazy sound collage called “How to be”, that is accompanied by spooky homage to the lower frequencies on A2, called “Cries”. Samuel L. Session’s remix of “How to be” on B1 gives the track a nicely diverse and harder edge. B2 is Stavostrand at his best, a beautiful example of his impressive understanding of timing and interaction, seemingly infinite sound bites perfectly arranged to give a harmonious track called “She Walks My Mind”. That’s the way to do it. The digital bonus track “Honey Coma” rounds off everything nicely with ist warm chirping and humming sounds, a beautifully relaxed arrangement.
