Review

Inspired by the stripped back technical set-ups of yesteryear, Mike Monday and Will Saul present the ‘Sequence 1’ EP, the product of the two artists limiting themselves to a Roland 909, a Korg Kaos Pad, a Dave Smith Polyevolver and recording their jamming on the fly. “We wanted to inject some excitement, energy and randomness into this release, so decided to play the tracks live with Mike on the 909 and keys and Will on filters and effects. We had a broad idea of where we were going before we pressed record, and recorded a few takes of each track, then took the best moments from each. The big challenge was reining in the slightly chaotic recordings, but after some tweaking we found a balance between old school rawness and modern production values.” Having previously released together on Buzzin’ Fly, remixed for DFA (The Juan Maclean’s legendary ‘Happy House’) and Applepips (Appleblim & Ramadanman), the duo present two exclusive tracks that explore the cutting edge leftfield sounds of house music in typical Aus form. Future collaborative efforts will see a remix for Scuba (whose high octane remix of Sequence 1 features as the B-side on this EP) on Hot Flush which will be out in September. In addition to their work together, both artists are currently in the process of completing their forthcoming solo artist albums. Mike Monday’s album is a project that will see him write and release a new track for free on his website every Monday for 10 weeks. A new means of creating and distributing musical material, the final 10 tracks will make up the content of the album. With a release set for Spring 2011, Will’s second full artist album will feature collaborations with Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Paul St. Hilaire, Charlene Soraia, and Detachments amongst others. Aus Music’s sister label Simple celebrates it’s 50th single release in November 2010 - a release that will see Will and his long term production partner Tam Cooper team up for a limited edition vinyl double pack

Mike Shannon (Cynosure, Wagon: “I'm diggin both of the mixes of Sequence 1. Nothing new here but exactly what I like and love! Killed the dancefloor last weekend.. can't wait to play it out again! ”

Resident Advisor: “Will Saul's Aus Music imprint has recently been linking house (deep, tech, whatever) with UK bass music, releasing music from Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison and Appleblim. Saul is among dubstep's most ardent supporters in the house community, embracing the dialogue between the two genres wholeheartedly. Here, we find Saul himself in collaboration with tech house oddball Mike Monday coming at dubstep from the other direction. "Sequence 1" is a quintessential Aus track, made up of shifting blocky shapes and rubbery basslines, but its lightly skipping progression, weird sound effects and prominent 808s recall recent experiments by Ramadanman and his Hessle Audio label. Meanwhile the swelling synths so typical of new-school dubstep-influenced UK house of the Night Slugs variety overtake the meek tech house of "Small Moments" in grand fashion. Hotflush label boss Scuba provides a remix of "Sequence 1," and provides what feels like one of the pivotal moments in this burgeoning crossover. Scuba jacks up the tempo and adds some UK funky percussion, creating a cartoonishly exaggerated track that wisely avoids the dark technoid explorations of his recent work. In its many iterations, dubstep is often a "serious" music, screwfaced and stoic; it's nice to hear Scuba introduce some wood and rubber into those steely beats of his.”

Richard Carnes (RA): “Scuba remix is the one here. Multi-steppin' techno for the floor. The lead synth of the title cut seems a little clean and rudimentary for my tastes, although "Small Moments" offers some nice hissy ambience and a smooth rolling groove.”

Tobi Neumann (Cocoon): “sequence 1 is bomb! really like it.. small moments i like for being musically.. sequence 1 scuba rmx good but not that groovy than the original.. i would say: "a good ep"!!!”
