Review

No stranger to straight up, tracky techno - the cuts on Adam Marshall’s third Cynosure release are pure evidence of his familiarity with the genre. “Searching” on side A is the slick, DJ-friendly, jacker - reminiscent of Detroit’s early sound. A relentless, but never tiring, deep analog bass sequence backed with Marshall’s signature grooves are the recipe here. Killer just about sums it up. On the flip, “Jamming the Unit” is another tracky workout designed for the long-mix, followed by the kick-less Basic Channel-influenced builder, entitled “Champion". A perfect weapon in any techno set. For the digital bonus C-side, Adam delivers a 15-minute epic drum workout mix called “Unit Jamming (Long Beach Mix)” Yes, another timeless, ace of an EP - packed with mix appeal from Adam Marshall… order now!

Adam Marshall continues to impress with his third release on Mike Shannon's Cynosure imprint, "Searching." The Canadian producer looks so comfortable with his own and Cynosure's take on techno, effortlessly allowing his tracks to flow with a tracky, yet easy groove. Perfect for taking you on a journey, DJs will be looking to any one of these tracks on the EP throughout each stage of their set.

The title track is a lusciously deep slice of jacking techno. Awashed with a slick sense of sophistication, "Searching" is a cry back to the early sound of Detroit. He manages to keep it stripped back and simple but flooding the track with a personality and soul instead of setting up a lifeless, mechanical sound. A relentless but warm sounding, deep analog bass sequence forms the foundations as Marshall's typical lush groove supplies the spirit.

"Jamming the Unit" delves a little deeper and a little darker, bubbling away for just less than eight minutes. Again led by a purposeful analog bass sequence, the track plods through various different soundscapes consisting of strange FX as the bass chugs along beneath. Curious percussion sounds scratch over the top end as drum rolls and distorted synths cascade around them. Rather than a final destination, "Jamming the Unit" is most definitely leading you somewhere; but even when you're on the track you have no idea where that is.

When you arrive at the next stop, you find yourself in a somewhat unexpected location. "Champion" is an entirely kick-less number that builds with a Basic Channel influence. Highly atmospheric but maintaining that element of tracky techno that always resides in a Marshall production, this is a fitting way to round off yet another top release both producer and label. Canadian techno in Berlin has never sounded so good.
