Andy Vaz’s Straight Vacationing, his first full-length artist album, since the 2006 release of Repetitive Moments Last Forever…, registers as less a straight-up collection of dance-floor burners and more of a variety pack that mixes club tracks and full-fledged house songs. Listeners hungry for just ordinary 4/4 throw-downs will not entirely get their share of those, but they’ll also get a whole lot more on this dynamic and well-rounded set of eight album tracks and that is exploring House Music not just as a simple one way street, but give you a very personal view of the music we call House. Straight Vacationing dives into the genre in all it’s rich variety: From deep melodic, early Chicago influenced Acid House, Jacking-Jedi Mind Tricks to Disco-type grooves and last but not least excursions into Bizzaro World, with a vaz typical almost psychedelic experimental-edged Sound, it’s all there. The album perks up the moment the first track, “Detroit In Me,” appears and when its acidy bass line percolates so determinedly alongside a female vocal motif ("I just need to put a little Detroit in Me), leaving little doubt as to the style in question, but Vaz polishes the track’s Detroit surfaces to a mirror-like sheen. A little bit similar to what Maceo Parker might sound like soloing over a funky Detroit-styled base, saxophonist Andreas Pasternack spreads his creamy playing all over “Stubnitz” and in so doing bolsters the album’s already soulful character. The album’s poppiest moment arrives in “Just Another Round,” whose hooks Vaz powers with a lead bass line and sweetens with a chirping female vocal. The funky-as-hell bass playing and the music’s cold sweat, not to mention the honk of Pasternack’s sax, might remind listeners of a certain age of the J.B.’s, James Brown’s ’70s band. On the experimental tip there’s “Fukuoka Liquid,” a bubbly, acid-techno shape-shifter featuring a hammering groove overlaid with synth smears, and “Worlds Collide,” an exercise in jacking acid

Gridface: “Yore label co-founder Andy Vaz’s second studio album reveals his intimacy with deep house. The opening track’s vocal sample, “I’ve gotta put a little Detroit in me,” could be construed as posturing in another producer’s hands, but considering Yore’s output over the past four years, there’s no argument—Vaz is a true believer in and promoter of Detroit music. The chord progression at the beginning echoes “Desire” by Carl Craig (as 69) but the jazzy piano at the end is purely original. It’s just too bad the vocal sample has a “Little Fluffy Clouds” feel to it. The saxophone on “Stubnitz” immediately caught my attention. Andreas Pasternack’s playing makes the instrument cool again. Messerschmidt is credited with “additional co-production” on this creative blend of airy synthesizers and bouncy bass. The album’s title track is all dubby bass and laid-back vibes. By contrast, “Fukuoka Liquid” is gritty with a muffled kick drum and a wormy acid midrange. Snares tap away and metallic notes burst, yet the cut feels spare. With “Just Another Round,” Vaz takes the disco edit to an entirely new level. A loop from the similarly titled Kasso Italo classic gains funky bass, handclaps, and an 808 cowbell. After a taste of the chorus, Pasternack joins in with a funky sax line. This is just begging to be played to a crowded dance floor. On “Colliding Worlds,” Vaz merges an acid line with Detroit-esque chords. “A Dope Jam (Bullyshit Mix)” playfully mocks New York disco decadence (and possibly a certain record store). A flight attendant announces, “We’d like to take the time to welcome you to New York, big city of dreams, city of opportunity. You’ll also find plenty of high taxes, bullshit laws… and much more bullshit. Break out your wallets and enjoy your stay….” Meanwhile, the sugar-coated bassline to “Boogie Oogie Oogie” loops away. The album concludes with “The Other Place.” Old-school beats merge with modern bass, spacey synths, and tabla courtesy of Timir Roy. A voice murmurs, “That’s the other place.” While the terms “meditative” and “uplifting” are overused, this is one of those golden tracks that’s instantly relaxing. In fact, the entire album is a joy (and as a bonus, it includes a link to MP3 remixes by Patrice Scott, Rick Wade, Alton Miller, and others). Vaz built himself a surprisingly soulful home. ”

Das macht er eigentlich immer schon, aber im Albumformat trennt sich die Spreu bekanntlich vom Weizen. Straight Vacationing sein nunmehr zweites Studioalbum, hat nichts mit Spreu zu tun, ganz klar. So lässig, jazzig und sophisticated er Anektdoten von Detroit anbringt, so ungezwungen und unzweifelhaft schwebt ein Nimbus der Glaubwürdigkeit über jedem einzelnen seiner Tracks. Ein Hauch Acid, eine Prise Disco: House erscheint hier als verdichtete Verwachsung seiner Wurzelstränge. Das zeigt bereits „Detroit in me“, die einleitende Nummer des Albums. Oldschool ist King, Klar. Aber trotz der präzisen Justierung des Rückspiegels bleibt da ein Rest, oder besser: Ein Überschuss an Futurismus, der kein Verfallsdatum kennt. Acht Tracks, besessen von einem Funk, der an eben der Stelle geboren wurde, so sich die Zukunft an der Vergangenheit Reibt. Grobkörnig, abstrakt und beseelt. Für alle, die es nicht mitbekommen haben oder Reviews immer nur auf ein griffiges Fazit hin überfliegen: I fucking Like! ”

Mit enzyklopädischen Wissen um die musikalische Tradition der Motor City ausgestattet, zieht er etliche Referenzpunkte und bleibt in seinem Klangentwurf doch – die Verlockungen sind allgegenwärtig – überraschend integer. Die 303 präsentiert sich ab dem ersten Track Detroit In Me allgegenwärtig, aber delikat sequenziert und bildet die Grundlage für ein fein sitzendes Rhythmuskorsett, das sich im Fortgang des Tracks, aber auch Albums auf vielen Ebenen entfaltet. Apropos Ebenen: Ob als gebrochene Drexciya-Reminiszenz (The Other Place) oder Einladung zum diskoiden Rollerskating-Abend (Dope Jam – A Bullyshit Mix) – Straight Vacationing überzeugt zum einen durch seine Heterogenität und zum anderen durch das Detailreichtum, das die Stücke auch zuhause zu einem Hörgenuss macht, ohne sie gleich der Funktionaliät zu berauben oder in Verdacht zu setzen, verkopft zu sein. Sei es die feingliedrige Bassline auf The Other Place, die eingangs erwähnte elegante Acidsynth auf dem eröffnenden Track Detroit In me oder die auf Feelin‘ ausgesetzte Vocalspur, die sich selber samplet und mit neuem Schwung neuen Anlauf nimmt. Sich ein bisschen Detroit rein zu tun ist bekanntlich immer gut für die Seele, denn die vom Aussterben bedrohte Stadt am Michigansee steht synonym für die großen Emotionen in der elektronischen Tanzmusik. Der Kölner Produzent und Labelbetreiber Andy Vaz gehört zu den wenigen Musikern hierzulande, der es schafft, seiner Liebe zur Motorcity mittels einer eigenen Sprache Ausdruck zu verleihen, ohne die Black Music „silly“ klingen zu lassen, um mal den guten Moodymann zu zitieren. Auf „Straight Vacationing“ rotiert mehr denn je die Glitzerkugel. Ein Dancefloorfiller wie „Just another round“ lässt mit seiner markanten Bassline so ziemlich jeden aktuellen Discoedit alt aussehen, ohne sich an die allgemeine Retromanie anzubiedern. Im Gegenteil, die Samples werden bei Vaz immer wohldosiert eingesetzt, die TR 303 zwitschert fröhlich, aber nie effekthascherisch vor sich hin, die handgespielt klingenden Bässe bilden eine Hookline. Und ein Stück wie „A Dope Jam“, in dem erst nach anderthalb Minuten die Bassdrum richtig reinkickt und für Euphorieschübe sorgt, ist der Beweis, dass House im Idealfall einfach zeitlose Musik sein kann. ”

Da steht Detroit an erster Stelle, denn der Opener “Detroit In Me“ zeigt dies nicht nur verbal, sondern mit Acid Lines und deepen Synthies auch inhaltlich. Superbes Stück. Ähnlich oldschool-lastig, nun mit Sax, kommt “Stubnitz“ in jazzigem Housekontext. Relaxt und trotzdem groovend. Das Titelstück rollt subversiv hart im Tech-House Stil und nimmt warme Klänge an Bord. Welch Kombination und Umsetzung. Scharf. Und dann nimmt der Pop-Vocal Housetrain Fahrt auf, wenn Femalevocals und süße Synthies auf ein discoides Bassfundament treffen. Catchy. 80er Acid Lines (“Colliding Worlds“), pumpende Disco (“A Dope Jam“) im Stil von DJ Sneak und Broken Electronic sind das Salz in der Suppe, die dieses Album zu einem exzellent genießenden Highlight werden lassen. 5 Points ”

Mit der Gründung des tief im Erbe von Detroit und Chicago verwurzelten Deep-House Labels Yore ging vor vier Jahren ein Pespektivwechsel einher. Yore ist ein leidenschaftliches Glaubensbekenntnis zu einem Retrosound, der von seinen Anhängern als zeitlos gefeiert wird.
