Wolfgang Tillmans - Device Control EP

Wolfgang Tillmans - Device Control EPThe title track Device Control opens with a stunning kaleidoscope of synths by Kyle Combs (New York) leading into the bouncing, hypnotic main body of this 134 bpm dance track, which Tillmans worked on with Tim Knapp at Trixx Studios Berlin. Additional live drums are by Rosie Slater of New York band, New Myths. The lyrics are made up of fauxsmartphone adverts about the supposed possibilities of streaming one’s life. The song was written and recorded in one take with an iPhone voice recorder followed by various stages of production in Berlin and New York. Angered Son borrows a single line lyric from a New York Times article about the perpetrator of the Orlando shooting: ‘His son had recently been angered by seeing two men kissing’. In two different a cappella versions, the looped and sampled vocals recall songs in the round style. The AA side is devoted to three outstanding remixes of this summer’s Make It Up As You Go Along. In what amounts to something of a music world sensation, Tillmans was able to win Salem’s Jack Donoghue and John Holland as contributors, it being their first released music in five years. In their signature style, the 2’45” short track is a strong abstraction of the original, leaving just the basic harmony in place while creating an intense piece of draw and pull. ‘I feel there is the same kind of magic or draw coming from the bayou and where we were staying inm Montegut, Louisiana, so it's nice to think we maybe tapped into that…’ John Holland Daniel Wang & J.E.E.P. have created a remix and a dub of Make It Up As You Go Along which will undoubtedly leave its mark on the house dance floor. They added addictive arpeggiators, turned the bassline over into a warping warm 303 groove, and slowed down the track to 117 bpm. The fast arpeggiators meanwhile give an uptempo feel to the groove. In addition to the existing vocals they sampled Tillmans’ vocal line ‘What we do here is a crime in most countries, but it’s not. There is no victim. Leave us alone’ from his Triangle / Gong / What track. The line references a number of activities and pleasures we indulge in, on a good night out. The EP was recorded and mixed this spring/summer in Berlin, New York, and Louisiana, possibly capturing a sense of time and place of where we are. The record sleeve and inner sleeve were designed by Wolfgang Tillmans. Videos directed by Tillmans will be released for Device Control and Make It Up As You Go Along – Salem Remix.

L.U.C.A. - I Semi Del Futuro

L.U.C.A. - I Semi Del FuturoL.u.c.a. is Francesco De Bellis aka Francisco. Years ago he started putting together some selections for a friend of his: Luca. The intention was to pick songs to be played during car rides, and like any other kind of ritual, this too would come with strict rules. You’d have to go throw the whole selection of 100 tracks without skipping, because every single one was important. Be it the sounds, the arrangement or its creativity, each track was there for a very specific reasons. It quickly became a monthly event which for several years evolved in a deep musical research without genre boundaries: Disco and psychedelic, soundtracks, library music, exotica, electronic and dance music, italo, new wave, pop or prog. Tracks of each and any historical period and provenance had been featured in this special compilations. But it wasn’t always that easy to come up with the right piece and eventually Francesco started producing a few on his own to fill in the gaps. After six tracks, it was quite clear that there was a project developing, one in which he could finally experiment freely, leaving behind the rules that often come with dance tracks. Of course, no name could have been better than the one of his friend that had inspired everything? And so L.u.c.a was born. Now, while preserving the same mind set, L.u.c.a is back with an album that embraces a new-hippie vibe, strongly pervaded by a mystical naturalism. This is a whole new universe in the making, where rumbling magmatic atmospheres evolve gradually in a journey through an idealist new world, celestial interludes revealing a full take over of nature, with a pervasive library feel that dates back to the great Italian masters, carrying on Edizioni Mondo’s legacy.

Kornél Kovác - The Bells

Kornel Kovac - The BellsFor the past seven years Kornél Kovács has been busy rocking dancefloors and boomboxes worldwide as one third of Stockholm’s Studio Barnhus alongside Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist. The label and DJ trio is spearheading a new era of fearless Swedish off-centre dance music, straddling the line between the cute and the menacing. Anticipation for Kovács’ debut album has been rocketing following stand out releases like 2014’s wistful Szikra, last year’s mad party anthem Pantalón on Glasgow’s Numbers imprint and the late night groove of Space Jam on Smallville Records. On The Bells, Kovács pops open his trunk full of sounds nicked from the lost and found bins of nightclubs all over the world. From the distorted organ chords of BB to the stripped down trancehall beats of Josey’s Tune and Szív Utca and the title track’s cinematic romanticism, it’s all of the bells and all of the whistles - further positioning Kornél Kovács as one of the most characteristic producers of modern house music. The record was completed in an intense two-week session with Kovács’ great friend and great studio engineer Matt Karmil in the cold winter of 2016. Another close friend, artist Malin Gabriella Nordin, has created the album artwork together with her brother Jonas.

D.r. Hooker - The Truth (180g Vinyl Lp)

vag013This reissue: 2016 Genuine reissue from the original audio sources, new analog transfer and improved mastering, pressed on black heavy vinyl. File under: Psychedelic, Rock Tracklisting: A1 The Sea A2 Fall In Love A3 A Stranger Smile A4 Weather Girl A5 This Thing B1 Forge Your Own Chains B2 I’m Leaving You B3 The Truth B4 The Bible B5 Falling Asleep It’s a miracle any copies of this privately pressed album survived – but be thankful it did, for here is an individual vision. Some people worry about when we’ll run out of oil. A rather smaller proportion of us worry about when we’ll run out of discoverable, deep-end thrills like this. There is just no way in the world items like Donald Hooker’s 40-year-old privately pressed LP should even exist as a thing – it more than likely only ran to about 99 copies in its original format, so how the hell did even one of those survive to create these new digital and analogue versions decades later? Connecticut-based Hooker – a tall, slim hippy with a history of substance abuse – was much given to wearing the sort of austere robe he sports on the sleeve, a fairly outré move even then. In early 1972 he hired a gang of local scene musicians to flesh out his wonderful songs and after a few brief rehearsals the band began recording. As soon as they were done they split – some never even heard the finished album, and what a treat they missed. Hooker’s arrangements are truly beautiful; a simple, swinging pop song like Weather Girl exists somewhere between The Doors and Curtis Mayfield, whereas The Bible ("If they’reknocking the Bible, be sure they are bent/ Just see and you’ll understand the book is heaven sent") has the propulsive drive of a pained George Harrison ballad crushed up against some of Neil Young’s freeform, string-banging joy. Then there’s The Sea, with its rolling religious allegories and the

Baby Guru - Sunshine Special

klv017 The first installment in Baby Guru’s Phase Two, finds the band experimenting with different styles, moods and languages while paying tribute to the land of sunshine and welcoming its fourth official member. “Marmalade Skies (Part I)” is an a cappella short song, playing almost like a canon and “Marmalade Skies (Part II)” is its Moog-arized reprise. “??? ???? ??? ?????????” and “????? ?? ??? ??” are homages to the Greek pop-rock scene of the past. “Bedouin’s Spiral” is an improvisational piece, performed live in the studio, while “Monday Generation” is an outtake from Baby Guru’s debut album. The homonymous track is a Brazilian influenced la-la-la sensation and first single “Glance” is Baby Guru’s take on modern pop. All in all, “Sunshine Special” is a daring, polymorphic mini-album that demands your attention and at the same time, an abstract dedication to the eight shades of summer. Being formed in 2009, Baby Guru is an ever evolving musical organism conceived by three childhood friends, in a basement. Now, six years and three studio albums later, they ‘ve been considered a leading band of the booming Greek rock music scene. Unlike though your typical rock band, Baby Guru play a colorful and otherworldly - sounding psych tunes, as described by Mtviggy after being picked as one of the 5 most interesting discoveries of 2014’s CMJ music marathon in New York.
